Family Photos in Kennebunkport, Maine | Elusive Photography

The best way to plan family photos in Kennebunkport is to pick your location by the feel you want, book a golden-hour session (about the last 90 minutes before sunset), and choose outfits in soft, coordinating colors that suit the coastline. Do those three things and the rest falls into place. I photograph families all along the Southern Maine coast, and

Kennebunkport is one of my most-requested places, whether you live here or you're visiting for a week of lobster rolls and beach days.

Here's how I help my clients plan a session that feels easy and looks timeless.

Where are the best places for family photos in Kennebunkport?

Kennebunkport is small, but it gives you several very different backdrops within a short drive of each other. These are the ones I come back to most.

Goose Rocks Beach. If you want wide-open sand, soft dunes, and that quiet Maine-beach feeling, this is my first suggestion. It's gentle for little ones, and the light at the end of the day is beautiful.

Cape Porpoise. The working harbor gives you weathered docks, lobster boats, and a real sense of place. It's perfect for families who want their photos to feel like Maine rather than just any beach.

Dock Square and the village. For families who love charm, the shops, the river, and the classic New England streets make a wonderful setting. Timing matters here, because summer crowds can be heavy, so I usually recommend early morning or a weekday.

Ocean Avenue coastline. The rocky shore and ocean views along this stretch are dramatic and romantic, and they photograph beautifully with bigger families and multigenerational groups.

In my years photographing families along the Maine coast, I've learned that the "best" spot is the one that fits your family. A toddler who loves sand will be happiest at the beach. A family with teenagers might prefer the village. I'm happy to talk through it with you.

When should we book, and what if the weather changes?

For summer and early fall, I suggest reaching out four to six weeks ahead if you can. Kennebunkport is one of the most popular places on the Maine coast, and prime evening times fill up quickly, especially in July, August, and foliage season. If you're a visiting family with a short stay, tell me your dates early and I'll work with you to find the best slot.

Weather is part of coastal Maine, and I plan for it. If rain or heavy fog threatens your session, we'll look at the forecast together and move to a backup date when one is available. Some of my favorite images actually come from overcast days, since the light is soft and flattering and nobody is squinting. The goal is to choose what will look best, not to rush through a plan that isn't working.

How do we make it easy with kids (and what do we wear)?

Families I work with often tell me their biggest worry is the kids, so I build the session around them. For babies and toddlers, we schedule around nap times and snacks. A happy, rested child is worth more than a perfect time on the clock. I keep sessions relaxed, move at your children's pace, and focus on real moments such as laughing, running, and snuggling, rather than forcing stiff poses.

For clothing, I offer a wardrobe consultation so you aren't guessing. My general advice for the Kennebunkport coastline:

  • Choose a soft, coordinated palette such as cream, sand, dusty blue, sage, or muted rose.

  • Skip big logos and busy patterns, which pull attention away from faces.

  • Layer for the breeze. A cozy cardigan or light jacket looks lovely and keeps everyone comfortable.

  • Dress everyone for movement, since the best photos happen when kids can play.

What does a session cost?

Digital images start at $250 and collections start at $950. Most of my clients invest between $1,500 and $3,000, and I offer 0% interest payment plans so that the cost can be spread into manageable installments. I also hand-deliver all print products, so the finished pieces for your home arrive in person.

If you're local, you may also like the Annual Plan, which covers multiple sessions through the year, so you can return to your favorite Kennebunkport spot in a different season.
